Cannery Courtyard to Host Public Viewing Events of FIFA World Cup and World Rugby Sevens Series

Fisherman’s Wharf Aims for a Big Score with Sporting Events Series June 15-July 22

The Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District (FWCBD), in partnership with the co-owners of the Cannery Courtyard, the Argonaut Hotel and the Academy of Art University, is hosting sixteen public viewing events for select games of the FIFA World Cup and the World Rugby Sevens Series games airing this summer. The public viewings will be held outdoors, in the historic Cannery Courtyard and will take place from Friday, June 15 to Sunday, July 22. A large outdoor screen will offer the perfect public viewing experience for both San Francisco residents and visitors and one of the only outdoor screenings in the city.

Viewers are invited to enjoy the games from one of the three outdoor restaurant patios located in the courtyard, including Blue Mermaid Restaurant, the Argonaut Hotel’s signature restaurant, Jack’s Cannery Bar, and Flying Ninja Sushi. There will also be limited public seating in the courtyard, provided by the Argonaut Hotel. Viewers are encouraged to bring portable chairs and blankets to sit on.

“We expect approximately two million international visitors to visit Fisherman’s Wharf this summer. We want to offer these visitors a festive environment to watch their favorite teams in their quest for the World Cup,” said Troy Campbell, executive director of the FWCBD. “It will be fun for residents of the local neighborhoods to come down and cheer along with visitors from all over the world.”

The Blue Mermaid Restaurant has planned a special menu to pay homage to the participating teams which will include English and German beer, Portuguese and Spanish wine, Belgian fries, and Swiss chocolate. Viewers can enjoy these bites and beverages on the restaurant’s spacious outdoor patio that features fire pits and heaters.

“The Cannery Courtyard is surrounded by the original red brick façade and is the ideal location for friends and families to gather to watch these iconic competitions while enjoying waterfront views,” said Stefan Muhle, area managing director of Argonaut Hotel.  “The Blue Mermaid’s recently-remodeled outdoor patio and delicious food and beverages will make watching the games all the more enjoyable.”
