City and business leaders and celebrity wax figures came together yesterday for the unveiling of the MerryTime at the Wharf holiday campaign, which includes ugly holiday sweater “yarn bombs” adorning the Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood. While the campaign is intended to promote the various holiday events and festive atmosphere of the area during the holiday season, one of the ultimate goals is to collect coat donations for the homeless population of San Francisco.
The Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District co-organized this effort with Project Homeless Connect and Madame Tussauds San Francisco.
“The holiday season is the perfect time to come down and celebrate at the Wharf,” said Fisherman’s’ Wharf CBD Executive Director, Troy Campbell. “The large crowds from the summer season have died down and it’s a great time to come enjoy the neighborhood. It is also a great area to find affordable gifts that extend well beyond San Francisco souvenirs.”
During the month of December, the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf crab wheel sign and a number of trees along Jefferson Street will be adorned in ugly holiday sweater “yarn bombs.” Madame Tussauds San Francisco will redress a handful of its celebrity wax figures in ugly holiday sweaters, including Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Lorde. Guests who visit Madame Tussauds San Francisco and donate a warm clothing item will receive 50% off general admission.
To officially kick off the month of celebration, the Fisherman’s Wharf CBD is inviting locals to The Wharf’s Ugly Holiday Sweater Pub Crawl, on December 2. At this event approximately 200 attendees donning ugly holiday sweaters will enjoy festive holiday cocktails at six different locations throughout the neighborhood. They will also be asked to bring a coat to contribute to the “Share the Warmth” neighborhood coat drive.
In the month of December neighborhood visitors can enjoy decorated boats and the elaborately decorated Christmas trees at PIER 39 and Ghirardelli Square. The waterfront will be the place to be, on December 16, for the 2016 Lighted Boat Parade. There will be many photo opportunities with Santa at both PIER 39 and Boudin Bakery.
Those wishing to contribute to the “Share the Warmth” coat drive can bring new or clean and gently-used coats, jackets, and hoodies sizes L-4XL to one of four drop-off locations at Fisherman’s Wharf: Madame Tussauds, Hotel Zephyr, the California Welcome Center at PIER 39 or Spice & Tea Exchange. The drive lasts throughout the month of December.
