  Sea Lions

  Address: PIER 39, West Marina
Phone: 415-289-SEAL
Web: www.pier39.com

The sea lions camped out in PIER 39's West Marina have been endearingly coined, "Sea Lebrities." These boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990 shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. At first they numbered from 10-50, but due to a plentiful herring supply, available dock space and the marina’s protected environment, the population grew to more than 300 within a few months. Each winter, the population can increase up to 900 sea lions, most of which are male. During the summer months, the sea lions migrate south to the Channel Islands for breeding season, but in recent years a small group stays year-round at PIER 39's K-Dock. More information and interactive exhibits are available on Level 2 of PIER 39 at The Marine Mammal Center’s Interpretive Center and Gift Store.

ALCATRAZ

No trip to San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is complete without a trip to Alcatraz Island. From the many vantage points along the piers at The Wharf, you’ll be able to see some remarkable views of this 22 acre island. So get your camera and be prepared to shoot some great photos.

General Information and directions on How to Purchase Tickets are below. For a summary of the island's lively and unique history, please visit the Alcatraz History page.

  General Information

To catch the ferry to Alcatraz, take a short walk to Pier 33 (Alcatraz Landing). Or you can take the Alcatraz shuttle which runs a 20-30 minute loop throughout the San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf area. Some of the stops include: The Aquarium of the Bay (PIER 39), Blue & Gold Fleet (Pier 41), Musee Mechanique (Pier 45), National
Maritime Museum (Ghirardelli Square) and Super Sightseeing, as well as several of the hotels in the neighborhood.

Alcatraz Island is one of San Francisco's most popular attractions and tours frequently sell out a week or more in advance. Tickets are rarely available for same-day sailings, so plan ahead! (See information below on how to order tickets.)

You can stay on Alcatraz as long as you like before it closes for the evening, but allow at least 2 ½ hours for sailing to the island, taking the cell house audio tour, exploring the rest of the island and its historic exhibits, and returning to the mainland.

The weather on Alcatraz is unpredictable and liable to change unexpectedly,so be prepared by bringing along a light jacket or sweater no matter how nice the day starts out. The best advice is always to dress in layers. Be sure to wear rain gear during wet winter months. Much of Alcatraz is steep and hilly. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for walking long distances uphill.

MORE TO DO

Walking along Jefferson Street and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of Fisherman's Wharf is an experience by itself. Why not take your adventure up a notch, and take a motorized Segway Tour of Fisherman's Wharf, or rent a bicycle from Blazing Saddles and go for a ride along Aquatic Park to the Golden Gate Bridge. Try touring the

city in a GoCar, a small, yellow GPS-guided storytelling car that can drive on city streets and broadcasts the history and sites of San Francisco while you ride around. For those who dare to test their skills and luck at catching dinner there are several chartered fishing boats at Fisherman's Wharf for sports-fishermen. The Wharf is also a great starting point for day-trips outside of the city including Napa and Sonoma Wine Country, Yosemite, Monterey and Muir Woods.

The original building where the Buena Vista sits today was a boardinghouse until 1916 when the landlord converted the first floor into a saloon. That saloon was named the Buena Vista. ("Good View" in Spanish) The view was good indeed and it served as a warm meeting place for hundreds of fishermen and handlers who worked for the nearby Sardine Cannery. There they could take in a whiskey while scouting the bay for incoming fishing boats which would mean, "Quick! Finish your drink and back to meet the boats!"

In 1952, with the help of a Pulitzer-Prize winning writer, the Buena Vista introduced to the world it's now famous Irish Coffee. The recipe has never changed and the view is still quite good.

Many of the Fisherman's Wharf restaurants are named after the family that has operated the establishment for generations. It is part of the charm of the Wharf, where the heritage of the Italian fishermen continues to this day. Cioppino's continues that tradition. Almost. We are third generation native San Franciscans who take great pride in both our city and our restaurant. The only difference between us and many of the other family-run restaurants at Fisherman's Wharf is that our family name is not Cioppino. We would have used our family name, but we were forced to admit it simply does not look good in lights.
