| Sea Lions | ||
| Address: PIER 39, West Marina Phone: 415-289-SEAL Web: www.pier39.com |
||
| The sea lions camped out in PIER 39's West Marina have been
endearingly coined, "Sea Lebrities." These boisterous barking
pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990
shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. At first they numbered from
10-50, but due to a plentiful herring supply, available dock space and the
marina’s protected environment, the population grew to more than 300
within a few months. Each winter, the population can increase up to 900
sea lions, most of which are male. During the summer months, the sea lions
migrate south to the Channel Islands for breeding season, but in recent
years a small group stays year-round at PIER 39's K-Dock. More information
and interactive exhibits are available on Level 2 of PIER 39 at The Marine
Mammal Center’s Interpretive Center and Gift Store.

a boardinghouse until 1916 when the landlord converted the first floor into
a saloon. That saloon was named the Buena Vista. ("Good View"
in Spanish) The view was good indeed and it served as a warm meeting place
for hundreds of fishermen and handlers who worked for the nearby Sardine
Cannery. There they could take in a whiskey while scouting the bay for incoming
fishing boats which would mean, "Quick! Finish your drink and back
to meet the boats!" In 1952, with the help of a Pulitzer-Prize winning
writer, the Buena Vista introduced to the world it's now famous Irish
Coffee. The recipe has never changed and the view is still quite good. |

| Though primarily founded during the Gold Rush, San Francisco
really made a name for itself in the turbulent 60's. Political protests,
the infamous "summer of love" and of course, the ground-breaking
music scene all marked San Francisco as an important and pivotal locale
for culture. And take it from us—this city with a past still makes
the scene, today. Whether we're talking foot-stomping live music or another
6.5 on the Richter, San Francisco truly rocks! Back in the day hippies used
to congregate at Haight-Ashbury, but these days the rockinest spot is the
Hard Rock Cafe San Francisco. Where else can you eat the tastiest burger
in town, trippin' out on groovy rock artifacts and treasures, while jamming
to the most outta sight tunes? Our mind-blowing memorabilia collection featuring
great locals is far out, man! Grateful Dead, Faith No More, Jefferson Airplane,
Journey, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, Vince Guaraldi… these
are just a few of the local bands that made it big. Now you Days / Hours of Operaton: Open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. |
