PIERsafe is a committee in the FWCBD whose goals are:
Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) is a free training program for individuals, neighborhood groups and community-based organizations in San Francisco. Through this program, individuals will learn the basics of personal preparedness and prevention. The training also includes hands-on disaster skills that will help individuals respond to a personal emergency as well as act as members of a neighborhood response team.
NERT was created in direct response to the aftermath that followed the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. In the event of another major disaster, it is highly likely that first responders will be overwhelmed, leaving many citizens on their own for the first 72 hours or longer after the emergency. The goal of NERT is to teach as many San Franciscan's as possible that, with basic training, they can make a difference in the lives of their families and others when, not if, they are affected by a disaster large or small.
The only requirements to become a NERT volunteer are being at least 18 years old and having a desire to become active in the community. NERT provides individuals with the opportunity to become a member of an elite group of trained citizen first responders who can help save lives. The skills acquired at NERT will help to develop self-confidence and peace of mind, and will make these volunteers valuable assets to their families, coworkers, and neighbors.
NERT Training is held at Fisherman’s Wharf twice a year, once in the winter and again in the late summer. NERT training is also offered in other locations around the city throughout the year. To get a complete listing and to register, please go to the SFFD website.
NERT training at Fisherman’s Wharf takes place on two consecutive Fridays from 8:30am – 5:30pm. You must attend both days to become certified. If you need to renew your certification, you need only attend the training on second Friday from 10:00 to 5:30pm.
