Community Development

The mission of the Community Development Committee is to celebrate, preserve and share the rich fishing and maritime heritage of Fisherman's Wharf and its continuing role in the development of San Francisco.  The committee has very specific goals to achieve this mission, they are:

  • To share the past, present and future stories of the fishing and maritime industries on Fisherman's Wharf through:
  • To support local, sustainable fishing practices
  • To partner with organizations that protect the Bay and its healthy fisheries

Grant Exploration
The goal of the Grant Exploration Committee is to assist the FWCBD and it's committees to locate, apply for and assist with grant applications and sourcing that help support the organization's mission and programs.

Since 2006 the Grant Committee has been integral in receiving the following grants:

  • Zero Waste Grant
  • Mayors OEWD Flower Basket Grant

Joseph Conrad Park
Tucked away behind the historic Cannery building at the end of Columbus Avenue is Joseph Conrad Park at the gateway to Fisherman's Wharf. The goal of this committee is to work with the surrounding businesses and neighbors to help maintain and beautify the park as well as partnering with city agencies on law enforcement and keeping the park safe for citizens and visitors.

Marketing / District Identity & Streetscape Improvements
The Marketing Committee works to promote visitations to Fisherman's Wharf. The Committee focuses it's attention on fine-tuning and optimizing the website. The advertising program will support local visitor-driven campaigns such as Crab Season and the Holiday Season as well as assist in promoting Fourth of July and Fleet Week. They also will aggressively try to secure sponsors to supplement the advertising budgets.

PIERsafe
The five goals of the PIERsafe Committee are:

  • Creating an emergency and preparedness plan for the community
  • Recruiting new community members to become NERT (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) certified
  • Holding an emergency response training exercise within the participation of businesses and residents in the Fisherman's Wharf community participating
  • Increase the involvement from the community in the PIERsafe program
  • Publishing quarterly PIERsafe newsletter with preparedness information and safety tips for the Fisherman's Wharf Community

Sustainability / Zero Waste
The Sustainability Committee was formed to help assist the Fisherman's Wharf businesses and residents reach the city's goal of becoming 100% sustainable by the year 2020.

Street Operations and Beautification
The goal of the SOBO committee is to ensure that the Fisherman's Wharf community is "Clean and Safe". The following are managed by the SOBO committee.

  • Pedestrian Way Finding Signage 
  • Hanging Flower Baskets
  • Quarterly Steam Cleaning of Streets (Land-side CBD)
  • Street Maintenance (Land-side CBD ) High Season
  • Graffiti Abatement Program (Land-side CBD)
  • Security & 10B Police Evening Coverage
  • A Fisherman's Wharf Amboassador Program 
  • Business Neighborhood Watch Program
  • Fisherman's Wharf Communication System 

Transportation (Transit)
The goal of the Transportation Improvement Committee is to help mitigate traffic congestion due to tour operations in the area and to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety while helping to support the continuing success of all tour operators within the Fisherman's Wharf Area.

The Transportation Improvement Committee meets on an as-needed basis, typically once every two months. All meeting dates will be announced to the community via email, and posted on the FWCBD's Meeting Calendar.
